The Miami Grand Prix on May 5, 2024, held at the Miami International Autodrome, saw a gripping race that highlighted both skillful driving and technical hurdles. Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, who started from pole position and initially controlled the race’s pace, faced a significant challenge from competitor Oscar Piastri. In a surprising turn of events on Lap 2, Piastri executed a decisive overtaking maneuver, catching Leclerc off-guard.

Leclerc had anticipated Piastri’s move to some extent. “He was a little bit on the left,” he said. “So I could see in my mirrors that he was there and that it was a possibility for him to go there. But again, I couldn’t really be super aggressive. I still had cold tires. I was really struggling to put those tires into temperature.” This miscalculation, combined with an overestimation of his Ferrari’s capabilities, allowed Piastri to secure the leading position.

Initially, Leclerc did not see the early overtaking as a major issue. “I just thought it wasn’t that much of a big deal if he would overtake me at that point of the race,” Leclerc said. “Because the race was still long and the DRS would help me to stay within a second of him and then, once my tires will be in temperature, I could overtake him again. But that was a misjudgment from my side.” This underestimation proved costly as the race unfolded.

A significant challenge for Leclerc was his car’s struggle with tire temperature, which had a profound impact on his performance. Ferrari’s inability to warm up the tires quickly hindered Leclerc from fending off positions aggressively. Compounding this issue was a surprising drop in lap times after the first pit stops. “We expected the undercut today to be a very difficult thing to do, just because we thought that the warm-up on the hard would be extremely difficult for some reason,” he reflected.

As the race progressed, Leclerc’s anticipation of a DRS advantage to reclaim his position did not materialize as expected. He expressed his concerns about the unexpected drop in time: “I don’t really have the explanation yet because I haven’t gone into details. I just jumped out of the car, but we’ve got to look into how the gap went from six seconds to one and a half, because that is definitely not what we expected. And that is a lot.”

One of the critical elements Leclerc and his team must analyze is the significant loss of lap time, which ranged from four to four and a half seconds. This discrepancy left Ferrari puzzled, as even on tracks favorable for undercut strategies, such a drastic time drop is unusual. Leclerc remarked, “Even on a track where undercuts are big, it’s still four seconds and a half or four seconds – a lot of lap time loss, which I don’t exactly know why and where we’ve lost this lap time. So this will be an analysis.”

Leclerc remains optimistic that the underlying issues will become apparent upon further investigation. “But when we speak about that amount of lap time, I think it will be straightforward. And we’ll see very quickly whether they just had a much better warm-up with the hard than us or whether we’ve lost it anywhere else.”

Moving forward, the focus for Leclerc and his team will be a detailed post-race analysis to determine the factors behind the time loss and tire warm-up issues. This insight will be crucial for Ferrari to adjust their strategies and improve their performance in future races. The Miami Grand Prix highlighted the intricacies and unpredictability of Formula 1 racing, where technical finesse and strategic acumen are equally pivotal in securing victory.
