Daniel Ricciardo’s apparent final race in Formula 1 took an emotional turn at the Singapore Grand Prix. The seasoned driver was visibly moved post-race, reflecting on his journey amid speculations of losing his seat to Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson. “The cockpit is something that, um, I got very used to for many years. I just wanted to savour the moment,” Ricciardo told F1TV.
Discussing his motivation for returning to the grid with Sky Sports F1, Ricciardo said, “I also have to acknowledge why I came back after the McLaren stint. I always said I don’t want to come back just to be on the grid, I want to try and fight back at the front and get back with Red Bull.” Though his comeback didn’t meet his high expectations, he reflected on his 13-year career with pride: “I put my best foot forward, let’s say the fairytale ending didn’t happen, but I also have to look back on what it’s been. Thirteen or so years and I’m proud.”
Despite finishing 18th, Ricciardo achieved the fastest lap in the race, allowing Max Verstappen to secure strategic points towards the championship. Fans honored him as ‘Driver of the Day,’ a rare sentiment he appreciated: “Typically the driver of the day is not something us drivers look too much into, but today I can say it’s something I’m appreciative of. That one today means a little something.”
Expressing readiness for an uncertain future, Ricciardo commented, “I have to be prepared for this maybe being it. Let’s say I’m at peace with it.” While no official announcement has been made about his replacement, the heavy rumors about Liam Lawson stepping in persist.
