F1 to Introduce Thrilling Post-Season Rookie Sprint Race in 2024

Formula 1 is on the brink of approving a groundbreaking rookie sprint race, slated to follow the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Anticipated to get the green light on October 2, 2024, this initiative aims to provide young drivers with valuable race experience amidst limited testing opportunities compared to their predecessors.

The proposed sprint race, set for the Tuesday after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, will coincide with the one-day Pirelli test in December. Featuring a brief qualifying session and a sprint race among ten rookies, this format is designed to offer genuine competitive track time. Formula 1’s Sporting Advisory Committee has reviewed the feasibility, deeming it a “realistic” addition to the regulations.

Christian Horner, Red Bull team principal, has been a vocal proponent of the proposal. “It’s something that I tabled at the last couple of Formula 1 Commissions because I think it’s great for the young drivers,” he stated. Horner highlighted the limitations of rookie tests, citing inconsistencies in fuel loads and engine modes, making it hard to judge performance. “I think this is a non-championship race for the junior drivers. I think it’s a fantastic opportunity.”

Pending a formal vote and finalization of logistical details, the event is expected to be broadcast, promising a thrilling showcase for emerging talent in Formula 1.
