Ricciardo’s Record Lap in Singapore Could Hand Verstappen F1 Championship Over Norris

Daniel Ricciardo turned heads at this year’s Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix by setting the fastest lap during the final moments of what could be his last race. Driving for VCARB, Ricciardo executed a strategic pit to switch to soft tires, allowing him to secure the fastest lap and be voted Driver of the Day.

This unexpected move had a significant impact on McLaren’s Lando Norris, who was poised to achieve a grand slam with a pole position, race win, and fastest lap. Ricciardo’s performance denied Norris the extra point, a critical loss in the tightly contested championship battle.

Max Verstappen of Oracle Red Bull Racing, who finished second in the race, remains a strong contender for the championship. Dre Harrison, Autosport’s Production Coordinator, highlighted the importance of the lost point, noting that consistent second-place finishes could still secure the championship for Verstappen. After the race, Verstappen’s engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, informed him of Ricciardo’s achievement: “Your old pal Daniel picked up fastest lap.” Verstappen responded with, “Thank you Daniel!”

The race results threw the season’s dynamics into a new light. Speculation abounds about Ricciardo’s future, possibly being replaced by Red Bull reserve driver Liam Lawson. Announcements regarding driver lineups for the next season are highly anticipated following the race break.
