Sergio Perez’s Frustration with Singapore GP Strategy: ‘Complete Disaster’
Red Bull Racing driver Sergio Perez did not mince words as he described his experience at the Singapore Grand Prix as a “complete disaster.” Perez, who finished in 10th place, was visibly frustrated with the team’s strategy at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, an event where overtaking is notoriously difficult.
Perez’s troubles started early as he was eliminated in Q2 and had to start the race from 13th position, while his teammate, Max Verstappen, began from second on the grid. Despite an early race improvement, Perez found himself stuck behind Williams’ Franco Colapinto and later Haas’ Nico Hulkenberg. “Yes, I think also the strategy, looking at it, when you see where Carlos [Sainz] finished [in P7 from P10 on the grid], probably we lost an opportunity to make more progress and undercut more people,” Perez lamented.
The combination of high temperatures and high humidity compounded Perez’s struggles. To manage the weight of their RB20 car, Red Bull opted to forgo a drink system, leaving Perez without hydration during the grueling race. “It was a very… it was a disaster, complete disaster,” Perez reiterated. “We had a good Lap 1, we were up to P10, and that’s basically where we finished, so a bit of a shame in that regard.”
Perez now looks ahead, hoping for better strategies and outcomes in future races.
