Toto Wolff Slams Christian Horner Over George Russell Poaching Rumors

In the high-stakes world of Formula 1, driver contracts and team dynamics often become the subject of intense speculation and strategic maneuvering. Recently, during the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix, Red Bull team principal Christian Horner remarked on George Russell, the Mercedes driver whose contract expires at the end of 2025, as a potential future asset for Red Bull. These comments from Horner, amid the performance struggles of Sergio Perez and Daniel Ricciardo, have sparked considerable intrigue within the F1 community.

“I’m not going to go into the ins and outs of driver contracts,” said Horner in an interview with Sky Sports F1. He emphasized the potential of reserve driver Liam Lawson, who impressed during a stint in the VCARB car last year, noting, “Daniel has had a reasonable season but it hasn’t been a stellar year.” Horner acknowledged the difficulty in deciding whether to replace Ricciardo with Lawson, stating, “Sometimes difficult decisions have to be made.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff responded sharply to Horner’s comments, accusing him of consistently seeking to create turmoil. “Christian is always trying to stir the s**t up,” Wolff stated. Nonetheless, Wolff reaffirmed his commitment to George Russell, expressing hopes that Russell remains with Mercedes indefinitely. “George is a Mercedes driver, has been forever, and hopefully will be forever. We are comfortable,” declared Wolff, dismissing Horner’s remarks as part of the sport’s competitive tactics.
