VCARB has denied allegations that Daniel Ricciardo’s fastest lap in the Singapore Grand Prix was a strategic move to benefit Max Verstappen. Critics suggested that Ricciardo’s swift pit stop for soft tires was aimed at depriving Lando Norris, a key title rival, of a crucial point in the championship standings.
Andrea Stella, McLaren’s team principal, expressed concerns about the sportsmanship of the move. “This is a big matter. You know, as soon as you invoke the sportsmanship, I think you need to approach this with a sense of responsibility, that I want to have,” Stella said. He highlighted the importance of autonomous team decisions within the constructors’ championship and found the action surprising. Despite the complexities, Stella maintained his friendship and support for Ricciardo.
Laurent Mekies, VCARB’s team principal, refuted the strategic allegations, explaining it was an attempt to reward Ricciardo amid a challenging weekend. “You have to give credit to the guy. Daniel had a crazy weekend to go through,” Mekies remarked, commending Ricciardo’s professionalism. “It’s as simple as giving the guy a chance in what has been a crazy weekend,” he added.
Ricciardo’s fastest lap has sparked broader debates on sportsmanship and strategic decisions in Formula 1. As these discussions evolve, the focus remains on maintaining fair competition while balancing team autonomy.
